Hong Kong, November 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — China Mobile International Limited (CMI) has completed the core 2Africa submarine cable infrastructure (2Africa) in collaboration with seven global partners including Bayobab, center3, Meta, Orange, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Group and WIOCC. Circling the African continent and connecting Europe, Asia and other intercontinental nodes, 2Africa further extends CMI’s global submarine cable layout and international connectivity resources, providing a robust digital infrastructure to accelerate digital economic development in Africa and its surrounding regions.
2Africa uses an open access model as the first cable to continuously connect East and West Africa within a single system. It spans more than 45,000 kilometers, connects more than 33 countries and territories in Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Asia, and has a designed capacity of 180Tbps. According to estimates, 2Africa is expected to contribute up to $36.9 billion to Africa’s GDP within the first two to three years of operations.
Following the commissioning of 2Africa’s key segments, CMI further optimized resource allocation along the Arabian Sea, the east and west coasts of Africa, and Europe. It also creates synergies with high-capacity submarine cables along Africa’s east and west coasts, such as PEACE and Equiano, allowing CMI to strengthen its multi-ring network covering Africa. 2Africa leverages global network resources such as Djibouti, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria, and submarine cable systems such as IAX-IEX to integrate high-capacity Eurasia-Africa bandwidth with local terrestrial cable and PoP expansion. The initiative aims to build a region-leading international submarine cable connection that will cover Africa and extend its reach into Asia-Pacific and Europe.
CMI will leverage 2Africa’s “high bandwidth and low latency” technology advantages to form strong synergies with the company’s existing cloud network capabilities, which include more than 100 submarine and terrestrial cables, more than 380 PoPs, and more than 1,270 data centers around the world. This robust infrastructure will enable CMI to provide its global carrier customers with high quality international leased lines, cloud leased lines and interconnection services covering multiple core African cities and extending into the African interior.
