Organizers of the Pan-African AI & Innovation Summit 2026 (PAAIS) have announced a strategic focus on revolutionizing Africa’s tourism and hospitality sector through artificial intelligence, positioning AI as a key driver of the continent’s $100 billion “experience economy”.
The summit, scheduled for September 22 and 23 at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra, will serve as the first major continental platform to bring together technology innovators, ministries of tourism, hotel chains and tour operators as AI planning tools become mainstream for travelers around the world in 2026.
Personalized travel experiences powered by AI
Recent data shows that 60% of travelers trust AI to plan and book their entire trip to Africa. PAAIS 2026 aims to capitalize on this trend by demonstrating how local operators can leverage African Sovereign AI to offer hyper-personalized ‘pursuits of passion’ built around niche interests such as Ghana’s jazz scene, Rwanda’s conservation efforts and luxury stays in Nairobi.
Kwakye Donkor, CEO of African Tourism Partners in South Africa and advisory member of PAAIS 2026, emphasized that tourism is Africa’s competitive advantage and that AI will level it out. He explained that the summit will show the industry how to move from general tourism to AI-driven high-value experiences that protect tourism assets and heritage sites and empower local communities.
Summit program highlights
The Smart Destinations track will feature panels on leveraging AI for biometric frictionless cross-border travel within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This addresses one of the continent’s long-standing challenges: facilitating seamless tourist movement across borders.
SME Digitalization Lab offers practical workshops to help boutique lodges and local guides implement an AI-powered 24/7 digital concierge to compete with global reservations giants. This initiative targets small businesses that are disadvantaged due to limited technology resources.
The AI for Conservation session will introduce acoustic sensors and predictive AI models that protect Africa’s natural assets from poaching, violations, and climate change. These natural resources form the core of the tourism industry within Africa and require sophisticated protection mechanisms.
Recognizing the importance of reaching young travelers through modern platforms, Creator Crawl offers curated immersions for digital storytellers who use AI-enhanced content tools to market African destinations to Gen Z audiences around the world.
Call for industry collaboration
The summit formally invites tourism boards, hospitality groups and aviation leaders to join the convergence of tourism and technology initiative. Potential collaborations include co-designing data-sharing agreements for predictive traveler analytics and launching an AI-managed green hotel pilot program to meet 2026 demand for sustainable travel.
Summit organizers stressed that they were discussing the future of how people explore Africa, not just a code. By integrating AI, we aim to ensure that the economic benefits of tourism reach communities across the value chain, from the smallest village to the largest city.
The Pan-African AI & Innovation Summit represents the continent’s premier event dedicated to growing Africa’s ethical AI ecosystem. The 2026 Summit is expected to bring together more than 2,000 delegates in Accra, with focus areas such as youth empowerment, policy dialogue and economic transformation, to transform the potential of technology into prosperity for the continent.
