South Africa is making history as it prepares to host the G20 summit for the first time on African soil. The milestone, to be held in Johannesburg under the presidential term of December 2024 to November 2025, marks a pivotal moment not only for the country but for the entire African continent. Under the guiding theme of ‘Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability’, South Africa positions itself as a bridge between developed and developing countries in the face of rising geopolitical tensions, the urgency of climate change and widening inequalities.
The G20 Summit is a strategic opportunity for South Africa to assert its position as a global economic player and regional leader. The summit, which brings together world leaders, investors and multilateral institutions in Johannesburg, is expected to significantly boost foreign direct investment (FDI), tourism receipts and growth in the MICE sector. More importantly, it provides a high-level platform to reshape global perceptions about Africa’s role in trade, climate action, and innovation.
“South Africa’s assumption of the G20 presidency comes at a pivotal time for the world and the continent,” said Cherrylee Samson, vice president of online trading giant Lark, which is organizing the upcoming international goods summit.
“This summit will not only highlight Africa’s immense economic potential, but also advance solutions on sustainable development, resource equity and inclusive industrialization.”
ICS2025: Advancing the future of African goods
In parallel with the G20 Summit, South Africa will host the International Commodities Summit 2025 (ICS2025) from 18 to 20 November 2025 at the Cape Town International Convention Center. ICS2025 will be the continent’s first major platform dedicated to promoting transparent, sustainable and future-proof commodity markets across Africa, with a focus on mining, agriculture and energy transition.
ICS2025, in collaboration with Brand South Africa, is part of a broader national repositioning strategy to rebrand South Africa as a globally competitive trade and investment destination. Drawing inspiration from successful global branding models such as the UAE, the partnership aims to attract capital inflows, build cross-border partnerships and enhance South Africa’s role in shaping global supply chains.
“The proximity of ICS2025 and the G20 summit creates a unique investment window for global stakeholders,” Samson added.
“We look forward to a strong coming together of policymakers, financiers and business leaders who are aligned in their interests in Africa’s commodity and energy future.”
Government initiatives for energy security and green transition
A key highlight of ICS2025 will be a special address by Samantha Graham Mair, Deputy Minister of Power and Energy, who will outline South Africa’s progress and investment pipeline in the renewable energy sector. Graham Mair, a prominent voice on the country’s energy transition, recently oversaw the registration of 2GW of new renewable projects in 2024, with a cumulative total of 3.3GW added to the grid.
Her participation underscores the Summit’s strategic focus on unlocking Africa’s renewable potential, strengthening energy security and promoting critical mineral supply chains for green technologies. These themes are particularly relevant for investors seeking access to the continent’s undeveloped energy assets and streamlined regulatory environment.
South Africa’s Renewable Energy Master Plan will also be in the spotlight, and will position the country as a leading player in green hydrogen, battery manufacturing and carbon-neutral growth. With a focus on job creation and equitable access.
Combining policy, investment and market influence
Scheduled within the same week and geographically close to each other, ICS2025 and the G20 Summit provide an unparalleled opportunity for interaction between global and African decision-makers.
The anticipated audience overlap at the two summits will improve prospects for consensus, increase Africa’s voice at the World Economic Forum, and facilitate high-level dialogue on trade resilience and energy security. ICS2025 will cover important topics such as:
Climate and energy innovation Africa’s evolving role in critical mineral supply chains Commodity technology Women and mining empowerment
“We are advocating for an energy and trade system that empowers Africa and women, who are largely unrecognized in the industry. At ICS2025, Africa’s future will be shaped through actionable dialogue and strategic investment,” Samson said.
Promoting inclusive growth and strategic alliances in Africa
The G20 Summit in 2025 and the International Commodities Summit in 2025 represent a rare turning point for South Africa. This will enable the country to lead not only as a host country but also as a standard-bearer for Africa’s integration into global markets.
By aligning global economic policy discussions with Africa’s development priorities, both summits will lay the foundations for a more inclusive, sustainable and interconnected global economy with South Africa firmly at the helm.
