The African Development Bank Group reaffirmed its commitment to Sudan’s recovery and long-term development when its incoming Country Manager, Mr. David Mutusi Mutuku, formally presented his credentials to Mr. Muhi al-Din Salem Ahmed, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, on December 7 in Port Sudan, the country’s interim administrative capital.

The meeting underscored the strong partnership between the World Bank Group and Sudan, even as the country continues to face a protracted and complex conflict that strains institutions, disrupts services, and deepens humanitarian and economic challenges.

Sudan praises AfDB for decades of support

Minister Ahmed expressed his deep gratitude to the African Development Bank Group for its long-standing cooperation, noting that the African Development Bank Group has played a pivotal role in supporting Sudan’s national priorities in the following areas:

    Infrastructure modernization

    Development of energy field

    Agriculture and food security

    Human capital and social services

He emphasized that the Bank’s sustained engagement during the Sudanese crisis reflects a rare and meaningful commitment to Sudan’s communities.

“The presentation of the credentials marks a new phase in our efforts at a critical time for this country’s recovery, rebuilding and future growth.”

Mr. Mutuku: AfDB continues to move forward with Sudan

Mr. Mutuku, a veteran financial management professional with decades of experience in both the public and private sectors, including 16 years with the African Development Bank Group, expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to Sudan.

He emphasized that the Bank remains committed to:

    Supports immediate stabilization needs

    Providing technical expertise during recovery

    Leverage customized financial products

Collaborate with development partners to coordinate relief and recovery efforts

    In his remarks, Mutuku said:

“The African Development Bank has been with Sudan for decades and will continue to be there during this difficult time and beyond. Together, we will help build the foundations for economic stability, recovery and inclusive and sustainable growth.”

    Founding shareholder and strategic partner

Sudan is one of the founding shareholders of the African Development Bank Group, and its relationship with the African Development Bank Group is historic and strategic. The Bank considers Sudan an essential partner in its mission to promote:

    A more integrated continent

    A prosperous economic trajectory

A resilient Africa that can overcome the challenges of conflict and climate change

Even in the midst of conflict, the Bank continues to support Sudan’s national institutions, seeking ways to strengthen their resilience and open long-term opportunities for recovery and future recovery planning.

Looking to the future: Collaborating for stability and growth

The presentation of credentials marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Bank’s cooperation with Sudan. Under Mr. Mutuku’s leadership, the African Development Bank Group aims to:

Strengthen cooperation with government ministries and agencies

Strengthen partnerships with international and regional development actors

Promoting innovative approaches to economic stabilization

Preparing the foundations for post-conflict recovery and sustainable development

This new initiative underscores a clear message: Sudan’s challenges are serious, but with strong partnerships and continued support, a path to stability and inclusive growth remains achievable.
