    Applications for the 2026 AfDB Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) Scholarship are now open. Under its Ten Year Strategy (2024-2033), the World Bank Group is funding these scholarship programs to build a new generation of expertise in Africa and strengthen the institutional and technical foundations for sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and marine resource management on the continent.

    SHOU is globally recognized as a leading research-oriented institution specializing in marine science, aquaculture and ocean governance. Our collaborative network with more than 40 international institutions and global organizations demonstrates and strengthens our outstanding leadership in promoting sustainable aquatic development and food systems.

    The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) is Africa’s leading multilateral development financial institution, dedicated to promoting sustainable economic development and social progress across the continent.

    Shanghai Ocean University Shanghai, People’s Republic of China

    AfDB and SHOU encourage qualified candidates from across Africa to take advantage of this unique opportunity to advance their expertise and contribute to the continent’s blue economy transformation.

    Content structure
    The program combines:

    Lectures and seminars by renowned SHOU professors Laboratory practicals and technical training Research-based discussions and group presentations Experiential learning through on-site visits to key aquaculture sites, cultural activities, and city tours
    result
    By the end of the program, participants will have: A solid understanding of China’s modern aquaculture system Practical skills in aquatic life observation, environmental sampling, and hatchery operations Enhanced cross-cultural communication and teamwork skills

    Summer School Programs Graduate Programs: Master’s and Ph.D.

    Eligibility criteria
    master’s program

    Be a national of an AfDB regional member country (RMC) and have experience in the fisheries or blue economy field Have a bachelor’s degree in a related or other field and be interested in pursuing a career in the fisheries or blue economy field Have English proficiency with IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 or above Be under 35 years of age at the time of application Good academic performance (e.g. GPA ≥3.0)
    PhD program Be a national of AfDB’s regional member country RMC and have experience in the fisheries or blue economy field Have a master’s degree in marine science, aquaculture, economics, environmental policy, development studies, or a related field Have English proficiency of IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 or above Have research experience and have published at least one paper Have strong analytical, research, and policy development skills Multicultural environment with excellent communication and teamwork skills and industry experience

    All successful applicants will be offered the following scholarships:

    Tuition, accommodation, meals, and a monthly stipend will be fully covered. Access to world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities. Professional training in marine and aquatic science.

    Note: Airline tickets and visa costs are the responsibility of successful applicants.

    Important notice:

    Only finalists will be contacted regarding next steps. Successful candidates must have an English proficiency of IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 or above. Successful candidates must comply with all SHOU rules, regulations, and codes of conduct. This fellowship does not confer employment status with the African Development Bank Group.
