African Development Bank praises Algeria’s development model and aims to replicate its success across the continent

✍️ Posted by: Dr. Hana Saada

Algiers – November 2025 – As a testament to Algeria’s growing influence and pioneering role in Africa’s development landscape, African Development Bank (AfDB) President Sidi Ould Tarr declared on Sunday the institution’s intention to draw inspiration from the Algerian model and extend its benefits to African countries aiming for structural transformation and sustainable growth. Welcomed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the AfDB Director paid tribute to Algeria’s achievements, particularly in strategic areas such as housing and desalination, two areas in which Algeria is recognized on the continent for its scale, innovation and long-term planning.

After his audience with the heads of state, Mr. Ould Tarr underlined that the meeting was an opportunity to express the Bank’s deep appreciation for Algeria’s significant progress and the promising prospects it offers for the transfer of expertise across Africa. He highlighted Algeria’s pioneering position in desalination, saying the country’s extensive infrastructure and advanced programs are a benchmark for African countries seeking water security amid increasing climate change pressures.

The central point of the discussion was the cooperation agenda between Algeria and the AfDB, with a particular focus on the strategic railway project linking Laguat, Ghardaia and El Menia. Described by Ould Tarr as “important not only for Algeria but also for Africa,” the railway is poised to become an important corridor linking the Sahel countries with the Mediterranean Sea, strengthening the flow of goods and passengers and accelerating the region’s economic integration. The AfDB President reiterated the institution’s commitment to support Algerian-led initiatives that generate high added value and promote sustainable development across the continent.

Beyond the technical and infrastructural aspects, the conference also had strong political and symbolic weight. Ould Tah expressed his deep gratitude to President Tebboune for Algeria’s “strong support” for his appointment as AfDB chairman last May, stressing that this support was “crucial” in securing the agency’s leadership. He said the Bank is proud of the unwavering support of Algeria, one of its most influential and steadfast partners, further strengthening the country’s strategic role in Africa’s financial and development mechanisms.

The AfDB President also emphasized the need to spread Algeria’s development experience across Africa. He particularly emphasized the relevance of Algeria’s achievements in housing and water management, two areas where many African countries face serious challenges. The Algerian model, based on rigorous planning, public investment, and a commitment to social welfare, was presented as a replicable blueprint that could generate tangible progress in different countries across the continent.
