    Adroit Technologies

Adroit Technologies (https://AdroitSCADA.com/), a leader in industrial automation and digital transformation solutions for over 30 years, is driving cutting-edge research and development (R&D) into an AI-powered water management platform designed to address one of South Africa’s most pressing infrastructure challenges: non-revenue water loss.

This R&D provides an opportunity to develop a first-of-its-kind AI-driven “pseudo meter” capability, a ground-breaking feature that can infer consumption and pressure data in areas where physical meters are not installed. Frits Kok, co-CEO of Adroit Technologies, said: “We have proven our initial concept and secured support from governments and other industry leaders to develop this AI-driven platform.”

With approximately 40% of the nation’s treated water being lost to leaks, theft, and aging infrastructure, Adroit Technologies is exploring new ways to power intelligent, data-driven water management. Using advanced machine learning (ML) and neural network algorithms, the research platform can analyze existing telemetry and SCADA data to detect leaks, predict demand, and infer flows in areas without sensors, paving the way for more efficient and transparent urban water systems in the future.

“South Africa’s water infrastructure challenges require smarter, data-driven solutions,” Kok emphasizes. “Our current research and development is focused on developing next-generation AI capabilities that will complement our existing water management technology in the future. This technology is already helping utilities reduce water loss and make informed operational decisions.”

    Tackling national challenges

Urban growth, vandalism and limited monitoring capacity are putting severe strain on South Africa’s water systems. In many municipalities, water leaks and pump failures are only discovered after a power outage occurs.

Adroit Technologies’ ongoing research aims to seamlessly integrate new AI tools with existing SCADA and telemetry systems to provide predictive analytics, real-time alerts, and actionable insights to help engineers identify hidden losses and optimize operations before a crisis occurs.

AI-driven “pseudo-metering” can infer consumption and pressure data even when physical meters are missing or damaged. This innovation could enable resource-starved municipalities to monitor network conditions that were previously “data-blind.”

Research that impacts the real world

Adroit Technologies’ current research focuses on developing a scalable, national AI framework that leverages prediction, anomaly detection, and digital twin modeling to enhance decision-making and support more efficient water use.

The hybrid neural network architecture (CNN-LSTM) and self-healing data middleware are designed to work effectively with incomplete or delayed data, a common challenge across South African municipalities.

“This research is about enabling resilience,” adds Hugo Pienaar, Director of Digital Services at Adroit Technologies. “By combining AI and decades of SCADA expertise, we are helping local governments anticipate problems before they occur and envision ways to manage scarce water resources more efficiently.”

    A smarter, more sustainable future

Adroit Technologies continues to research and develop AI-powered water management capabilities and already offers a suite of proven water management and SCADA solutions that enable utilities to detect leaks, optimize assets, and improve operational efficiency.

As the research and development program progresses, these new AI capabilities will be introduced to Adroit’s product range, allowing customers to benefit from the latest innovations in predictive maintenance, data analytics and infrastructure optimization designed to enhance South Africa’s water security and sustainability.
