March 2, 2026, 9:19 a.m. The government will hold a public hearing on the FinTech Regulatory Commission Bill on March 2nd on the bill calling for the establishment of the Fintech Regulatory Commission. The hearing will be organized by the Joint Committee on Digital and Electronic Banking, Banking Regulation, Science and Technology, Communications, Capital Markets and Institutions.
Once established, the commission will regulate and oversee Nigeria’s burgeoning fintech sector. The Commission will operate through specialized departments and have regional offices in six geopolitical zones. The West Africa Industrialization, Manufacturing and Trade Summit & Exhibition will be held in Lagos from March 3 to March 5, 2026. The summit, endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, is themed “Accelerating West Africa’s Sustainable Industrial Revolution towards Economic Prosperity”. It aims to convene policymakers, manufacturers, investors and development partners to foster regional industry growth and deepen trade integration. The three-day program will feature high-level summit sessions, international exhibitions, technical seminars, and leadership roundtables. According to organizers, discussions will focus on expanding manufacturing capacity, strengthening regional value chains and unlocking investment across key sectors including energy, infrastructure, automation, logistics and technology. The Federal Government has agreed with the African Finance Corporation to jointly finance three major mining initiatives, including a $1.3 billion alumina refining project, through the Solid Minerals Development Fund. The refinery will utilize the latest Bayer process flowsheet and feature an on-site gas-fired cogeneration plant for steam and power generation, according to a statement on Sunday by Segun Tomori, special media assistant to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development. Tomori said the agreement is the culmination of discussions between AFC and SMDF to co-finance the construction of a $1.3 billion alumina smelter that is expected to process approximately 1 million tonnes of bauxite ore per year. This will enable financial and security regulators to track recycled phone numbers and prevent fraud related to SIM card reassignment. The portal, known as the Communications Identity Risk Management System, is expected to be launched by the end of March.
