Solar power and storage project in Egypt: UAE-based AMEA Power, in collaboration with Japan’s Kyuden International Co., Ltd., announced a 1GW solar power plant with a 600MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Egypt. To be delivered at an estimated project cost of over $700 million, it will be Africa’s largest single-asset renewable energy facility and battery storage project, the company highlighted. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is leading a consortium that has pledged approximately $570 million in funding for projects planned in Aswan Governorate. AMEA Power and Kyuden will own the facility on a 60-40 basis. Once operational in June 2026, it will provide more than 3 million MWh of clean electricity annually. In July 2025, AMEA Power commissioned the country’s first utility-scale BESS facility with 300 MWh capacity, fully powered by its 500 MW solar PV project in Aswan Governorate.
Renewable Energy Agreement with Botswana’s KP Group: India-based KP Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Botswana government to develop large-scale renewable energy and power infrastructure in the country. They predict this will increase Botswana’s renewable energy capacity to nearly 5GW. This cooperation includes the maintenance and construction of high-voltage power lines in the country and strengthening interconnections with neighboring countries. These projects will require nearly $4 billion in capital investment.
120 MW Solar Power Project in Tunisia: AMEA Power has announced the commissioning of the 120 MW DC/100 MW AC Kairouan solar power project in Tunisia. This is the country’s first solar power plant to be commissioned under a concession system. It is located in Kairouan province. Funded by IFC and the African Development Bank (AfDB), the facility is expected to generate nearly 222 GWh of clean electricity annually.
19.3MW Solar Power Project in Namibia: SolarCentury Africa has commissioned the 19.3MW Gers solar power plant in Namibia, marking it as Africa’s second dedicated commercial solar power plant for power trading on the South African Power Pool (SAPP) and the first such project in Namibia. The company’s 25 MW Milo solar power plant in Zambia was the first of its kind. The Gerus solar power plant was developed in partnership with Sino Energy. Solarcentury Africa owns the Gerus project, which is funded by parent company BB Energy.
288 MW Facility in Azerbaijan: UK’s INTEC Energy Solutions has been awarded a $117 million EPC and two-year O&M contract from Shafag (Jabrail) Solar Limited for the 288 MW Shafag Solar Project in Azerbaijan. The company has completed site mobilization and is proceeding with earthworks, internal roads, tamping and material delivery. INTEC said this project marks an important milestone for regional expansion and long-term cooperation in Azerbaijan.
GameChange Solar Order by Saudi Arabia: GameChange Solar has been awarded an order to supply the Genius Tracker 1P system to the Khulis Solar PV independent power generation project in Saudi Arabia developed by ACWA Power. The project is being executed by an EPC joint venture of CEEC, GPEC and NWEPDI. We plan to use trackers designed for harsh climate conditions. Construction on the site is scheduled to begin in December 2025, with commissioning scheduled for November 2027.
Sun King raises $40 million from Lightrock: Off-grid solar power company Sun King has raised $40 million in equity financing from sustainable investment platform Lightrock to support its expansion across Africa and Asia. The company said the new funding will enable Sun King to expand its product portfolio and leverage advances in solar power, control electronics and battery science to deliver higher capacity and more cost-effective systems. Sun King aims to deploy an additional 50 million solar kits and 3.8 GW of distributed solar capacity by 2030, providing energy access for approximately 200 million people.
Partnership on Egyptian project: Norway’s Scatec has signed a shareholder agreement with Norwegian developing country investment fund Norfund and EDF Power Solutions for a capital partnership on the 1.1 GW solar power and 100 MW/200 MWh battery obelisk project in Egypt. Upon completion of the transaction, Norfand will own 25% of the project holding company, EDF Power Solutions will own 20% of the operating company, and Scatec will retain economic control. He said the obelisk project is the largest construction Scatec has undertaken to date and will support Egypt’s growing electricity needs and energy transition.
