Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvrya presented the construction status report of Taranta City Stadium, confirming that it is currently 66% complete.
Prime Minister Mvulya said in a statement on Friday 14 November that the government expects all major external works to be completed by the end of the year.
“I have carried out a comprehensive inspection of Taranta City Stadium and it is currently 66% complete.
“By the end of December 2025, all exterior and major infrastructure works will be completed, paving the way for contractors to begin finishing works in preparation for full operation by February 2026,” he said.
Mvulya added that various government agencies are developing transport, public facilities and other infrastructure to support seamless access to the facility.
“In line with a whole-of-government approach, complementary works including rail connections, road improvements, public works and other supporting infrastructure are progressing steadily to ensure seamless access and strengthen the stadium’s wider ecosystem,” he added.

Mvurya further said that once completed, the stadium is intended to be a landmark development that will enhance Kenya’s ability to compete on the global sporting stage and attract world-class events.
“This iconic and monumental project is fundamental in positioning Kenya as a sporting powerhouse on the continent and in the world, increasing our ability to host world-class events, while demonstrating Kenya’s excellence, ambition and growing reputation in modern sports infrastructure development,” he concluded.

This comes months after the State House Spokesperson’s Office revealed that Kenya will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In an update on Sunday, July 7, which was later reposted by former Sports Cabinet Secretary Above Namwamba, the secretariat said the ceremony would be held at Taranta Sports City Stadium.
The 60,000-seater stadium is taking shape after President William Ruto inaugurated construction in March 2024.
“Significant progress is being made in the construction of the 60,000-seat Taranta Sports City, a major sports arena being built at Jamhuri Ground under the Ministry of Sports of CS Above Namwamba, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2027 Afcon,” a statement from the State House Spokesperson’s Office said.
In September 2023, Kenya was nominated to host the 2027 AFCON tournament along with Tanzania and Uganda.
The three East African countries jointly bid to host Africa’s biggest football tournament, defeating fellow bidders Senegal, Egypt and Botswana.
Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium are among the stadiums that will host the prestigious tournament in 2027.
