Total construction cost: 78.4 billion won, total length: 10.5km
13 express bus stops, 5 bridges
Building a specialized organization for overseas projects, first results in 1 year and 7 months
HS Hwaseong, a construction company based in Daegu, has taken the first step to develop overseas markets.
HS Hwaseong announced on the 5th that it has entered the African market for the first time by winning a contract for the BRT (Interstate Bus System) road construction project in Nairobi, Kenya. This order is the first result in about 1 year and 7 months since the company changed its name in July 2024 and launched an organization specializing in overseas business, and the construction will be carried out jointly with Eishin General Construction.
Yongjin General Construction, a partner of this project, is responsible for the stable operation of the entire project based on its experience in overseas projects, management and operation capabilities, and sales experience for overseas clients that it has accumulated over the past 50 years.
For 68 years, HS Hwaseong has been constructing various projects such as roads, bridges, and buildings at urban infrastructure sites in the country. We take responsibility for quality and construction based on precise construction technology and on-site process management know-how. The two companies aim to maximize synergies through this division of roles.
This project is an African urban transportation infrastructure development project supported by the Export-Import Bank of Korea’s EDCF (External Economic Cooperation Fund). The total construction cost is approximately 78.4 billion won, and the construction period is 24 months from the start of construction. HS Hwaseong will participate with a 40% stake.
BRT is a public transportation system called trunk express bus, and many buses operate in the city center using dedicated bus lanes. It has the advantage of ensuring low-cost and efficient public transportation in urban areas where subway service is difficult.
The construction will be carried out as a civil engineering roll on a 10.5km road on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, including two overpasses and three steel bridges. It also includes construction work on 13 BRT stops and service hubs.
In particular, the Korean Embassy in Kenya is located at the starting point of the construction, and the headquarters of the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is located at the end, so it is expected that once completed, it will be an opportunity to promote HS Hwaseong’s technological and environmentally friendly construction capabilities to Africa.
This project is the result of HS Hwaseong’s cutting-edge technology in the civil engineering and construction fields that it has accumulated over 68 years in South Korea, as well as its track record in building various urban infrastructures, which have been internationally recognized. HS Hwaseong plans to actively explore overseas markets by utilizing environmentally friendly construction methods and smart construction technology, as a stepping stone to its first entry into the African market.
“We will continue to expand our overseas business portfolio by expanding our participation in EDCF bidding, including international greenhouse gas reduction projects, environmentally friendly renewable energy projects, and overseas PPP projects,” said Jang Ik-mo, head of HS Hwaseong’s overseas business team.
