…………FG says he will convene a state housing roundtable.
…Incorporate housing reform advocates into state government.
Abuja, Nigeria – July 30, 2025:- Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Mr. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa has officially declared the 19th African International Housing Show (AIHS) open, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to closing the housing gap in Nigeria through bold, comprehensive and innovative reforms, building on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “New Hope” agenda.
Ark delivered opening remarks at the Trancorp Hilton in Abuja to an audience of ministers, parliamentarians, ambassadors, development partners, housing experts, financial institutions and private sector leaders from across Africa and beyond. Dangiwa stressed that despite increased housing delivery efforts, affordability remains the biggest barrier to home ownership on the continent.
“Across Africa, millions of families still cannot afford decent housing, even when it is available. This administration is not just building homes; we are repairing the structural and macroeconomic foundations for truly affordable and sustainable housing for Nigerians today and in the future,” the minister said.
He highlighted the federal government’s three-tier Renewed Hope Housing Program (consisting of Renewed Hope Cities, Renewed Hope Estates, and Renewed Hope Social Housing Estates) as a blueprint for providing affordable housing across the country.
To date, over Rs 70 billion of private capital has been mobilized under public-private partnerships (PPPs) to drive large-scale urban housing development.
The Minister also highlighted key interventions by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), such as the rent-to-own scheme and rental assistance products aimed at easing housing pressures on urban workers and young families, and the upcoming MOFI Real Estate Investment Fund (MREIF) to expand access to long-term mortgage loans at affordable interest rates.
In a major announcement, Mr. Arc. Dangiwa announced plans for a state-by-state home ownership and housing development campaign, a joint initiative with state governments, private developers and development partners aimed at bridging gaps in policy implementation at the local level.
“We will embed housing reform champions in state governments and convene state housing roundtables to provide practical support to build viable housing projects and open financing opportunities,” the minister explained.
He further reiterated the ministry’s commitment to urban renewal and slum upgrading, ensuring that “no one and no place is left behind”, in line with the United Nations Habitat Global Plan of Action and the Addis Declaration on Inclusive Urban Development.
arc. Mr Dangiwa called on development finance institutions, donor agencies and the private sector to work with the federal government to translate the knowledge shared from forums such as AIHS into tangible outcomes for Nigerians.
“Housing is not a privilege; it’s a right. When we invest in housing, we invest in people, jobs, cities and our collective future,” he said.
The 19th Africa International Housing Show is expected to attract thousands of participants and exhibitors from across Africa and around the world, and will serve as a strategic platform for dialogue, partnership building and showcasing innovative solutions to Africa’s housing challenges.
