Innovation doesn’t just refer to the technology we create. It’s about the systems we build to ensure technology works for everyone. This February 28, the MIT Sloan Africa Business Club will realize its vision at the 15th annual MIT Africa Innovation Conference (AIC).
For more than 15 years, the MIT Africa Innovate Conference (AIC) has evolved from a bold student-led initiative to a globally recognized platform that shapes Africa’s ambitions and institutional capacity. As highlighted in the Africa Innovate Conference Impact Report, the AIC ecosystem has generated more than $150 million in follow-on capital, helped create more than 1,500 jobs, and impacted more than 1 million lives, particularly through the expansion of alumni ventures such as Sanergy and MDaaS Global.
AIC’s impact goes far beyond venture creation. Over the years, the conference has convened leaders who influence national policy, global trade, and technology governance, reinforcing its role as a vital conduit for talent, leadership, and systemic change across the continent.
Co-chaired by Rita Ugandeng-Telila and Bernard Obiang in 2026, AIC has grown into a trusted platform for venture creation, systems thinking, and leadership development, bringing together builders, policymakers, investors, and academics to turn bold ideas into real-world results.
The 2026 theme “Africa’s Intelligence: Building Systems for Shared Prosperity” goes beyond the buzzwords of AI and technology. This is a deep dive into how policy, capital and talent come together to create scalable and sustainable solutions for the continent. It’s a conversation about moving from individual success stories to scalable systems that create wealth and opportunity for all. It’s all about how we build the infrastructure for trust, collaboration, and sustainable growth.
What to expect:
The conference weekend begins with a hackathon, a high-intensity arena for African intelligence agencies. Here, some of the continent’s brightest minds come together to not only build apps, but design resilient and scalable systems.
Over the course of 24 hours, multidisciplinary teams will collaborate in real-time to tackle the continent’s urgent challenges, transforming the theme of shared prosperity from concept to concrete digital and policy prototypes. The focus is clear. A solution that is practical, scalable, and firmly rooted in Africa’s real-world priorities.
After the hackathon, the weekend moves into a gala night, a moment of celebration and reflection. Celebrating AIC’s 15th anniversary, the evening is more than just a social gathering to celebrate African heritage, excellence and identity.
With a backdrop of music, culture, and community, builders, investors, and policy makers connect beyond initial introductions and form relationships that can grow into long-term partnerships. This evening is a reminder that Africa’s innovation story is driven not just by capital and technology, but also by culture, community and a sense of shared purpose.
MIT AIC 2026: African Intelligence: Building Systems for Shared Prosperity
Once the gala night celebrations are over, the focus shifts to the main conference. The next day, Wong Auditorium becomes a gathering place for global thinkers and African architects, a room filled with architects of change.
Through curated panels and fireside conversations, leaders from a variety of sectors will share insights on how to take the discussion from idea to action, building and scaling across the continent. Topics will span both strategy and practice, from policy and leadership to financing African AI at scale, and will also include sessions on building for real-world conditions, energy and urban resilience, human capital development, and scaling health systems.
AIC 2026 will feature a stellar line-up of global thinkers and African builders from a variety of fields. Starting with keynote speaker Funke Opeke, the main event will feature thought leaders such as Dr. Patrick Njoroge (former Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya) for fireside talks on policy and strategic leadership. Other transformation architects include business and technology leaders such as Gregory Ugwi, Yassin Raggiooui, and Tolu Alabi, who will delve into building real-world solutions and funding African startups building for global markets. The conference will also bring together experts in the field, including Professor Erikmoor Josu and Dr. Ida Z. Puswarai Riddihau in Energy and Urban Resilience, and Health Systems Experts Dr. Uche Ralph Okpara and Dr. Adeola Ali in Scaling Health Systems.
