DUBLIN–(Business Wire)–The “South Africa Construction Industry 2024” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

This report on the South African construction industry includes information on the industry’s economic contribution, construction activity, number of contractors, sectoral investments, and relevant growth indicators and indices. Includes information on notable companies, corporate activities, latest trends, and public and private sector projects.

There are 61 company profiles, including leading construction companies such as Aveng, Raubex and Stefanutti Ltd, engineering, consulting and service companies such as Haw & Inglis, TCM Developments and Waco, and leading construction companies in China such as China Communications Construction and China State Construction Engineering.

    introduction

South Africa’s construction industry has been under pressure for more than a decade. Several civil engineering and construction companies have gone out of business, while others have rescued their businesses or diversified by selling local operations. In real terms, the industry’s contribution to the economy in 2023 was 35% lower than in 2016. Construction activity recovered in the second half of 2024.

Although the pipeline of public sector infrastructure projects has improved, many industry players no longer have the capacity to execute large-scale projects. This paved the way for major Chinese construction companies to gain a foothold in the domestic market.

    South African construction market opportunities

3D printing of building materials and structures. Construction support services such as local and regional scaffolding and formwork supply. Projects focused on green buildings, including sustainability and off-grid living. We provide building management systems that improve energy and water efficiency. Supply of prefabricated modular structures for mining operations, housing, schools and medical facilities. There are opportunities for the private sector to partner with governments and their agencies on infrastructure projects. Urban renewal and reuse and conversion of vacant commercial and industrial buildings into affordable housing units.

    South African construction market challenges

Construction safety issues and regulatory compliance concerns. Corruption, irregular procurement practices and the construction mafia are continuing threats. High interest rates continue to constrain growth in the homebuilding industry. The industry has been significantly weakened by a prolonged lack of investment, low levels of government spending, procurement backlogs and delays in the completion of public sector construction tenders. The shortage of experienced professionals with specialized skills has been exacerbated by the exodus of some major construction companies.

    Key market trends

The government is soliciting private investment in strategic infrastructure projects. China’s major construction companies have been awarded public sector infrastructure projects and are expected to play an increasingly important role in the industry. The high interest rate environment continues to constrain residential construction activity. Although the industry remains under pressure, confidence in the civil construction and architecture subsector is improving. The focus is on energy-related projects, especially renewable energy. There is a growing focus on sustainable construction methods, including energy and water efficiency and the need for climate-resilient infrastructure.

    South African construction market outlook

Public sector infrastructure spending is expected to increase. The public sector project pipeline is expected to improve and construction activity to expand. Private sector investment is increasing and the value of new projects will more than double by 2024.

Lower interest rates could encourage housing construction. The industry continues to be held to ransom by the construction mafia. An increasingly significant challenge is the presence of major Chinese construction companies, which are powerful competitors in the public infrastructure field.
