Norton Rose Fulbright advised Kamoa Copper SA on two landmark Renewable Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) entered into with Crossboundary Energy and Green World Energy.

The PPA consists of a solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant with a total capacity of 408 MWp of renewable power and over 1.1 GWh of co-located battery energy storage systems (BESS), enabling a 24-hour supply of 60 MW of baseload renewable energy to the Kamoa-Kakula copper mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The two projects are among the largest private power procurement projects agreed in sub-Saharan Africa and are also the largest renewable energy commercial and industrial (C&I) power projects. It is also the region’s first hybrid solar PV and battery storage to provide continuous baseload power to C&I off-takers.

The power supply from the two projects will enable Kamoa to maximize renewable power input, strengthen energy security and reduce emissions.

The Norton Rose Fulbright team that advised Kamoa was led by London-based partner Laura Kiwelu and Cape Town-based director Matt Ash. They were supported by London partner Melusi Dlamini, solicitor Claire Whitney, senior associates Priya Kahlon and CJ Gray, associate Muchinda Muma and associate designee Hannah Howell.

Mr Kiwell said: “The Kamoa-Kakula mine is one of the most important copper sources in the world and we are very pleased to be able to support Kamoa in increasing its capacity to produce more sustainable and ‘green’ copper. The sub-Saharan African market has seen a significant increase in commercial and industrial power projects in recent years, with a strong pipeline of exciting activity to support this. We look forward to working with Kamoa again in the future and seeing the progress made in copper.” As a result of these PPAs, the Kamoa-Kakula Mine was created. ”

Mr. Ash commented, “Kamoa has made great strides towards not only investing in the local region, but also making its business operations more renewable. These are highly complex landmark projects, the first hybrid continuous baseload project in the country. We are very pleased to be able to support Kamoa on this opportunity.”

Augie Bakome, Kamoa’s project manager, added: “We commend Norton Rose for playing a key role in successfully delivering two complex PPAs within the tight schedules that defined Kamoa’s project delivery criteria. Their deep legal expertise, strategic foresight and precise execution have been fundamental in advancing our renewable energy goals and energy transition, enabling our collaborators to understand and deliver on Kamoa’s criteria.” our continued success. ”

Diamantis advised Kamoa on aspects of local law.
