The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have launched a high-level consultation meeting on the extension of the Regional Integration Strategy Paper for West Africa (RISP) (2020-2027).
The three-day meeting, to be held from 4 to 6 February 2026 at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja, will bring together senior officials from both agencies to develop RISP’s strategic direction in the region.
In his opening remarks, AfDB West Africa Director Ramin Barrow emphasized the urgency of extending the current RISP, which expires in December 2025.
He said the extension of the strategy is essential to maintain continued efforts and support new operations under the AfDB-ECOWAS partnership.
Welcoming the participants, His Excellency Omar Aliu Touray, Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, commended the AfDB for its comprehensive support to regional organizations.
“The African Development Bank has helped drive development across multiple sectors in West Africa, including agriculture, infrastructure, trade, customs, capacity building, health, education, industry and energy,” he said.
RISP serves as a key regional planning instrument that guides cooperation between ECOWAS and AfDB to foster economic integration, strengthen regional infrastructure, and promote social development across West Africa.
The extension is expected to provide a strategic framework in line with new regional priorities such as trade facilitation, industrialization and energy security.
The three-day consultations will focus on assessing current strategies, identifying emerging challenges and defining actionable measures to continue promoting sustainable development and regional cohesion in the next phase of RISP.
As West Africa navigates rapidly changing economic conditions, this partnership demonstrates ECOWAS and the AfDB’s renewed commitment to fostering inclusive growth, strengthening regional connectivity and strengthening resilience across member countries.
