Looting the Sahrawi Wealth: The Treachery Pact between Washington and Rabat
โ๏ธ ๐๐: ๐๐ป. ๐๐ช๐ท๐ช
ALGIERS, March 7, 2026 โ The last word will belong to the Sahrawi people. And the plundered wealth will be repaid a hundredfold.
In a brazen display of geopolitical predation, Washington and Rabat signed an agreement exposing the cynical exploitation of Western Sahara. The agreement, cloaked in euphemisms like “strategic cooperation” and “supply chain security,” opens the door for U.S. companies to plunder mineral resources from territory that under international law belongs to no one but the Sahrawi indigenous people.
According to the African Information Agency, the agreement grants privileged access to several strategic deposits rich in rare earths, niobium, vanadium, gold and molybdenum, including Twihnath, Ramlaga and Grybat-Lakhuda. These minerals are important for the defense industry, aerospace, battery and drone technology.
But behind the bureaucratic language of “economic partnership,” the agreement blatantly circumvents core principles of international law. This means that only the people of Western Sahara have the right to decide the fate of their land and its resources. The region has been pending decolonization since 1963 and remains on the United Nations list of non-self-governing areas. No third party, including the occupying power, has the legal authority to exploit the wealth of the Sahrawi people without their explicit consent.
By making concessions as if the Moroccan state had full sovereignty, Rabat would not only defy the long-standing UN position, but also ignore multiple international and European judicial rulings affirming that Saharawi resources cannot be exploited without the approval of the people.
The economic risks are immense. Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbon Mining (ONHYM) is already exploring several sites in partnership with companies such as Managem and phosphate giant OCP. Tsuichinate alone contains significant concentrations of rare earths and niobium, metals essential to the military and aerospace industries, and is scheduled for industrial extraction in 2028.
Two models are being considered: a joint venture between Moroccan and American companies, or a Moroccan company mining minerals solely for sale to American buyers. Whatever the approach, the US government’s objectives are clear. It is about ensuring access to critical resources while preventing the expansion of Chinese influence into the world’s strategic metals supply chains.
But no amount of geopolitical rationalization can erase the harsh legal reality. Morocco has no recognized sovereignty over Western Sahara. Exploitation of a territory’s resources without the consent of its people is a direct violation of international law. There are many precedents. In 2017, South African authorities seized a ship carrying phosphates from Western Sahara, demonstrating the heightened legal and political risks surrounding Saharawi resources.
The agreement reveals a calculated attempt to turn the non-self-governing territory into a mere strategic mineral repository. By exploiting Western Sahara economically, Rabat wants to create a fait accompli that will influence the political settlement of the conflict.
But international law is clear. Until the Saharawi people exercise their right to self-determination, no decisions regarding natural wealth will be legitimate without their explicit consent. Any action to the contrary will inevitably face increased legal, diplomatic and political challenges.
