Anglo American Platinum has announced that its Mogalakwena mine in South Africa has been assessed against the Responsible Mining Assurance Initiative (IRMA) comprehensive mining standards for the first time, achieving an IRMA 50 level of performance.
Mogalakwena is the last of Anglo American Platinum’s four PGM mines to complete an IRMA audit. This follows the achievements of the Unki Mine in Zimbabwe, which was the first mine in the world to publicly commit to being independently audited against the IRMA Standards for Responsible Mining, achieving IRMA 75 in 2021 and reaffirming IRMA 75 in 2024 following regular monitoring audits. Mototolo and Amandelbult were also audited for the first time in 2024 and achieved IRMA 75 and IRMA 50 respectively.
IRMA provides independent third-party verification of comprehensive standards for all mined materials, providing ‘one-stop coverage’ for all issues related to the impacts of industrial-scale mines. The IRMA scoring system recognizes four performance levels. IRMA Transparency. Mines are evaluated by a third party and their scores are shared publicly. IRMA 50, 75, or 100 indicates that a mine meets a core set of key requirements and that at least 50%, 75%, or 100% of the requirements of each of the four principles of the Responsible Mining Standard are sustainable or fully met, respectively.
IRMA’s Responsible Mining Standards have been developed over more than 10 years through a public consultation process with over 100 different individuals and organizations, including mining companies, customers, ultimate downstream users of mining products, NGOs, trade unions and local communities, and are considered one of the most rigorous validation processes.
Craig Miller, CEO of Anglo American Platinum, said:
“As a major adopter of IRMA, we recognize that our stakeholders, including our shareholders and customers, need to trust where and how our metals are mined. With this latest IRMA certification for Mogalakwena, we are confident that our We are extremely proud of the work our teams continue to do across our operations to support responsible mining to demonstrate the ethical value chain of our metals. We look forward to continuing to lead the way in the PGM space.”
said Amy Boulanger, IRMA Executive Director.
“Through detailed IRMA audit reports, mining companies, communities, and companies purchasing mined materials will have the information they need to determine what is working well at a particular mine and what needs more attention. The Mogalakwena report shows that the mine, along with the other three Anglo American platinum mines in South Africa and Zimbabwe, can present a transparent and independent assessment of its environmental and social performance.”
