Energy giant Cosmos Energy has participated as a sponsor at the MSGBC Oil, Gas and Power 2025 conference and exhibition to be held in Dakar, Senegal from December 8th to 10th. The company, which is at the forefront of regional gas development, achieved several operational milestones last year and now has its sights set on other regional developments. Cosmos Energy’s participation in this event reflects the company’s commitment to engaging potential partners to advance strategic gas projects and is expected to open the door to new collaborations in West African LNG.
Cosmos Energy has a strong presence in West Africa and has led the LNG market in the MSGBC region. In collaboration with its partners energy giant BP (operator), Senegal’s National Oil Company (NOC) Petrosen and Mauritania NOC Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocabres, Kosmos Energy will export the first LNG cargo from the Greater Tortue Amayim (GTA) project in April 2025, and the Gimi FLNG carrier will begin commercial operations in June 2025. The project, located on the maritime border between Senegal and Mauritania, is the first large-scale LNG development in the region. GTA achieved LNG production in February 2025, with a target of 2.3 million tonnes per year in the first phase. The partners are now looking at the second phase of development, which will increase production to 5 tonnes per year.
The success of the GTA has not only established Senegal and Mauritania as global gas exporters, but also demonstrated the viability of investing in large-scale offshore gas projects in the MSGBC region. Besides GTA, Kosmos Energy is also developing the Yakar-Teranga project, which is estimated to have gas reserves of up to 25 trillion cubic feet. The project, located in Senegal, is led by Kosmos Energy as operator in partnership with Petrosen. Both companies are currently looking for partners to support their development activities, highlighting a strategic opportunity for international companies.
Both GTA and Yakar Teranga are expected to bring great opportunities to the region. GTA is primarily focused on export, with some designated for domestic use in Senegal and Mauritania, while Yacar Teranga prioritizes low-cost gas produced primarily for the domestic market. This will be combined with offshore LNG facilities that will export gas to international markets, thereby enhancing the country’s position as a global supplier. Yakar Teranga will transport domestic gas to the coast via pipeline and aims to produce 550 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
