The World Bank Group and the African Development Bank Group (https://www.AfDB.org), with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Global Energy Alliance for People and the Planet, and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), hosted the first Mission 300 Day on the sidelines of the African Investment Forum’s (AIF) 2025 Market Day in Rabat (http://apo-opa.co/4oeFycH). Morocco.

The event highlighted how each country’s National Energy Compact showcases investment-friendly opportunities and galvanizes action towards the common goal of providing electricity access to 300 million people across Africa by 2030.

The 300-day special mission convened African government ministers, investors, and development funders to highlight national efforts, present implementation roadmaps, and discuss progress on regulatory reforms essential to unlocking private sector investment. Additionally, the event served as a platform to enhance investor-government dialogue, champion Africa’s private sector leadership, and facilitate knowledge transfer on best practices for achieving expanded electricity access.

Mission 300 (https://apo-opa.co/4psuZUp) is an initiative led by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank that brings together African governments, the private sector, and development partners to bring electricity to an additional 300 million Africans by 2030. Twenty-nine African countries have already developed national energy compacts (http://apo-opa.co/3KqI8yz) with time-bound targets to increase access, strengthen utilities and attract private enterprise. capital.

During the Mission 300 day, Ministers from Comoros, Guinea, Gambia and Lesotho presented an implementation roadmap with concrete deadlines to achieve universal electricity access by 2030, and engaged directly with private sector leaders and development partners on regulatory reforms needed to unlock investment.

Since its creation in 2018, the African Investment Forum has attracted over $225 billion in investment interest across key areas aligned with the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 (http://apo-opa.co/43MCVI0) and the African Development Bank’s Four Fundamentals (http://apo-opa.co/3Mp6hpJ).

Eric Fernström, Regional Director for Infrastructure, East and Southern Africa, World Bank Group “Mission 300 is proof that Africa is open for business. With ongoing energy reforms, strong country leadership, and a ready pool of financeable projects, we have created a real opportunity for private capital to scale up solutions that will drive Africa’s transformation. Access to energy is not just a goal, it is about creating jobs, driving economic growth, and giving millions of people the opportunity to build better lives.”

Kevin Kariuki, Vice President, Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth, African Development Bank Group

“Mission 300 will ensure the affordability and financial sustainability of the utilities and energy sectors, if supported by large-scale and rapid investments in generation, transmission, distribution and last-mile connectivity infrastructure, and complemented by necessary reforms. The African Development Bank will de-risk investments, mobilize institutional capital, and ensure that Mission 300 not only provides electricity but also millions of jobs, vibrant industries, and dignified livelihoods for our people.

Carol Koech, Vice President, Africa, Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet

“Mission 300 requires innovation. We can’t build the grid of the future using the tools of the past. That’s why the Global Energy Alliance is providing technical guidance, preparing bankable projects, and deploying catalytic capital to attract private investment. By breaking down the silos, we can build the power grid of the future through distributed renewable energy (DRE). and other innovative solutions that quickly reach underserved communities. The National Energy Compact demonstrates African leadership in action, and we are proud to be Africa’s partner in delivering reliable, affordable, clean energy to 300 million people by 2030.”

Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, said:

“Access to energy is a powerful driver of development. Through Mission 300, we are advancing Africa’s energy transition in an investor-ready manner. Sustainable Energy for All is working with partners to design innovative financing instruments that expand private sector participation in local currency platforms, paving the way for a pan-African mechanism to attract new capital to developers across the continent.”

William Ashiko, Senior Vice President, Rockefeller Foundation

“Mission 300 represents one of the most ambitious energy and critical energy access initiatives of our time, and what we saw today at AIF confirms that this momentum is real. With governments leading and partners working strategically, a reliable pipeline is emerging that can deliver clean, reliable power to hundreds of millions of Africans. Philanthropy can help drive progress, but it is the collective strength of partnerships that will drive the ultimate results.”
