Ahead of the reconstruction and upgrade of the Alaoji-Onitsha 330kV single-circuit transmission line, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Federal Ministry of Finance, and PGM Nigeria Limited, organized a sensitization program for Project Affected Persons (PAPs).

According to a statement issued late on Tuesday by the TCN Director of Public Relations, Mr. Ndidi Mba, the program held in Awka, Anambra State brought together representatives from about 14 communities in Anambra State.

The statement disclosed that about 79 communities in Abia and Imo states are also operating along the transmission line corridor that spans the three states.

The workshop brought together representatives of the Anambra State government, traditional rulers and non-governmental organizations to discuss the successful implementation of the Alaoji-Onitsha transmission line project. Interactive sessions were also held where stakeholders discussed key issues and future directions.

In his address, Dr. Ifeanyi Okonkwo, representing the Onitsha Sub-Region Assistant General Manager (Transmission), Engr. Enugu Region General Manager (Transmission), Dr. Thomas Inugonum, explained that the project is aimed at improving power supply in the region.

He noted that the project would boost economic activities across the affected provinces and called for cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation. He further assured participants that individuals, families and business owners affected by the project would be adequately compensated.

He also addressed participants, TCN African Development Bank Project Implementation Unit (PIU) General Assembly/Project Manager, Engr. Mr Omobola Sobo confirmed that provisions had been made by the government to compensate those affected.

Mr. Eng Sobo added that the project is unique in the country and consists of two main transmission lines: the Mando-Rimi-Zakala dual-circuit 330kV quad transmission line in the north (total length of 204 km) and the Alaoji-Onitsha transmission line (total length of 138 km). Both lines are designed to significantly increase power transmission capacity.

Earlier, PGM Nigeria Limited consultant Bassey Uzodinma explained that the number of affected structures was minimal and consisted mainly of residential and commercial buildings.

He pointed out that rights of way (RoW) have been reduced and the impact is mainly limited to fences, shops and similar structures. According to him, about 355 structures have been affected in Awka alone.
The Alaoji-Onitsha transmission line project crosses three states of Anambra, Abia and Imo in the South East.
