The Africa Energy Investment (IAE) 2026 Forum to be held in Paris on April 22-23, 2026 will host a high-level panel discussion titled ‘Reviving Legacy Fields for Maximum Recovery’, a strategic session aimed at unlocking Africa’s untapped potential. The session will explore how to revitalize mature oil and gas fields to sustain domestic production in the long term, maximize recoverable reserves and reduce the risk of stranded assets.

Africa’s mature fields, many of which have been in production for more than 10 years, still have significant untapped reserves. Operators are increasingly leveraging modern oil recovery enhancements and improvements in oil recovery technology, supported by AI, digital reservoir modeling, and integrated gas injection strategies. This session is perfectly positioned to highlight practical applications from across the continent.

Nigeria leveraged AI to inject gas into a mature reservoir in Port Harcourt, optimizing recovery rates and reducing operating costs. Ghana’s Tano and Saltpond offshore fields are evaluating CO2 and natural gas injection as a technically viable and economically sustainable way to enhance production. Angola’s Agogo Integrated West Hub development, operated by energy giant Total Energy and partners, is set to increase production from aging oil fields by mid-2026, with support from the country’s Incremental Production Decree to encourage investment. Meanwhile, in the Republic of Congo, Total Energy is investing to extend the production life of its mature Mohonord oil field, with new production expected by 2025.

Panelists will also be positioned to examine asset integrity management and systems-based maintenance principles that are critical to safely and efficiently operating aging infrastructure. Predictive maintenance, IoT-enabled monitoring, and digital analytics are helping African operators reduce downtime, lower operating costs, and enhance safety while extending the useful life of existing assets.

The session is also expected to further consider policy frameworks and investment incentives to promote revitalization. Examples include Angola’s Incremental Production Decree, Gabon’s 2019 Hydrocarbons Law Amendment, and Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry Law, all of which aim to attract capital and stimulate production from mature oil fields while optimizing economic value.

For investors, this session is a unique opportunity to understand how technological innovation, regulatory support and operational excellence intersect to extend Africa’s production life and secure long-term energy value.

IAE 2026 is a special forum aimed at connecting African energy markets with global investors and will serve as a key platform for deal-making in the lead-up to Africa Energy Week. Scheduled for April 22-23, 2026 in Paris, the event will offer participants two days of in-depth interaction with industry experts, project developers, investors and policy makers.
