The African Energy Chamber (AEC) strongly welcomes Reconnaissance Energy Africa’s announcement of a successful hydrocarbon encounter at the Kavango West 1X well in Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) 73 off the Namibia coast. This result represents one of the most significant milestones to date for Namibia’s onshore energy potential and reaffirms Namibia’s position as one of the most attractive frontier markets for exploration in Africa and the world.
On December 3, ReconAfrica reported that the Kavango West 1X well had been safely drilled to a depth of 4,200 meters, with results confirmed to contain significant hydrocarbon content. The well encountered a significant zone of oil and gas-bearing rock, with more than 60 meters of hydrocarbon deposits and additional hydrocarbon signatures identified at deeper intervals. These results not only highlight the geological potential of the Damara fold belt, but also support ongoing modeling that suggests significant development potential across Recon Africa’s 6 million acre lease. The company announced plans to test the well into production during the first quarter of 2026. This is an important next step to confirm deliverability and commerciality.
AEC commends the efficiency and technical excellence of the work, which was completed safely, on time and on budget. For Namibia, one of the fastest emerging exploration hotspots on the African continent, this progress reinforces the importance of sustained upstream investment, supportive regulatory frameworks and strong collaboration between operators, governments and communities.
Promoting onshore development and local employment
While Namibia’s recent ocean discoveries have attracted significant global attention, land-based exploration is equally important for long-term energy security and economic diversification. ReconAfrica’s latest results provide renewed confidence in the role land-based resources can play in creating jobs, reinvigorating local supply chains and accelerating industrialization.
Every step of the Kavango West 1X campaign – from seismic exploration to drilling and further testing – has created local business opportunities and direct jobs for Namibians. Continued success in PEL 73 will open the door to a new round of contracting, infrastructure development, and capacity building, particularly in logistics, field services, community development programs, and environmental management.
Commitment to community partnerships
AEC also acknowledges ReconAfrica’s ongoing engagement with communities in the Kavango region, including local partnerships and capacity-building efforts undertaken during exploration activities. The company’s proactive approach to stakeholder dialogue, transparency and collaboration sets a strong precedent for how frontier exploration is conducted in Africa.
Expansion of the land-based industry has the potential to have a long-term socio-economic impact on northern Namibia, creating new opportunities for young people, small and medium-sized enterprises and local governments, while supporting the country’s broader development goals.
A step forward towards Africa’s energy future
As Africa seeks to balance energy security, economic growth and responsible resource development, Namibia continues to shine as the continent’s success story. The Kavango West 1X results strengthen the case for continued exploration in Africa, especially at a time when global capital allocation is increasingly selective and investment competition is fierce. By moving quickly to production trials, ReconAfrica is demonstrating its long-term confidence in Namibia’s potential. AEC encourages continued collaboration with national regulators, environmental authorities, and community stakeholders to ensure timely and responsible progress toward assessment and, ultimately, development.
“This discovery is a huge win for Namibia and a huge win for Africa. ReconAfrica’s progress proves that committed investors, supportive policies and strong community partnerships can unlock real energy opportunities onshore.” AEC Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk said, “These results strengthen confidence in the Damara fold belt and reaffirm Namibia’s status as a global exploration hotspot. The Chamber fully supports this next stage of testing, which will create jobs, build capacity and foster long-term economic growth for Namibians.”
